Abundant Healthy Living

The first wealth is health.

My Spinal Column
Recently I attended a seminar which reminded me of the importance of the issues I’ve discussed in previous columns such as keeping your skeletal structure in alignment, properly attending to your spiritual needs and making a commitment to supporting your health through good nutrition. Another factor to consider on the road to healthier living, of course, is what you are doing with your mind. At this same seminar, a new book about cell biology research, jumped out at me.

The Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton, describes how we change on a cellular level by changing what we believe about ourselves. He describes how genes are impacted by what occurs outside of the cell. Beliefs, says Lipton, whether positive or negative, directly affect our genetic makeup. Belief creates biology. For instance, what happens if we live in a constant state of “fight or flight”? Chronic, high-intensity stress begins to debilitate our immune system and disease sets in. Our cells react to the toxicity of our negative beliefs. Conversely, our cells will function well when we have beliefs that support health, happiness and peace of mind. There are many ways we can achieve such health. We can identify if we are stressed, the cause of that stress and how we want to go about healing, regenerating and comforting ourselves. When we pay attention to our thoughts and take time to tap into our Source Energy, health will be a natural outcome of those endeavors. Hands-on health practices such as chiropractic and massage help support your parasympathetic nervous system and draw you away from the sympathetic (fight or flight) response that is a result of constantly living in stress. Meditation and prayer are mindful ways of nourishing positive beliefs which support your health. Paying attention to the state of your relationships is one more path you can take toward optimal health.

Here’s to your health!

Ed Juda
Ed Juda is a Certified Massage Therapist who specializes in therapeutic deep tissue work. He was trained at the Minneapolis School of Massage and Bodywork and has been in private practice for eight years. He has received additional training in Reiki and Myofascial Release. Catering to the specific needs of each client, Ed works with accident victims and also treats marathon runners who he says, “Can’t even walk down stairs after a race.” Ed has also treated dancers, gymnasts, ice skaters and even an opera singer. However, he serves a broad range of people and says, “Anyone who has a body is my client.”

“I like that I get to help people,” says Ed. “Being a massage therapist allows me to be involved in a person’s life where I get to make a positive impact.” Clients appreciate that Ed performs massages in their own homes. “They really like that they can slip on a robe,” says Ed, “and melt into a puddle and not have to worry about dealing with traffic after I leave them.”

All a client needs is an open, six- by ten-foot area in which Ed can set up his massage table. He provides all the linens, a bolster and oils. Ed uses fragrance-free jojoba oils, which he says, are mild, good for a person’s skin and which present no sensitivity issues to his clients. Ed does most of his work during evening hours and on weekends, though he is available for bookings at any time of the day. He also will travel to the outer reaches of the metro area. The cost for a one hour session is $60 or as Ed says, “A dollar a minute.” He also offers one-and-a-half-hour sessions which include stretching and more concentrated work on specific areas. There is a special rate of $75 for those sessions.
